Make Money with a Blogger Side Hustle

How to Make an Extra $1000 a Month with a Blogging Side Hustle

These days, pretty much everyone has a side hustle to make a little extra money.

Maybe you’re a new blogger that wants to turn this into your full-time job, or maybe you’re a mama that just needs a little extra money to supplement your family income.

Either way, I have a secret weapon that can help you to earn an extra thousand bucks (or more) every single month.

And that secret weapon is called: affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing is simply promoting someone’s product or service through a special trackable link. When someone clicks on that link and makes a purchase, you earn a commission on that sale (yay).

Today, I’m going to walk you through the steps to earning your first thousand bucks through affiliate marketing. And if you follow this system that I lay out for you, you can easily make that and more, every single month.

Here's how to earn an extra $1,000 month with a blogging side hustle | follow my step-by-step guide for making money with affiliate marketing!

This post may contain affiliate links. If you click one of these links and make a purchase, I receive a small commission, at no additional cost to you. You can see my full disclosure here

Your first step to making money with a blogging side hustle is signing up for the right affiliate programs. There are hundreds of programs out there, and ultimately, it will depend on your audience and what you choose to recommend to them.

You can join popular programs like Amazon Associates and promote a variety of products on your blog. Or, you can join bigger affiliate networks that match you up with companies that have affiliate programs in your niche. When people click on your links and make a purchase, you make a commission.

This article lists some of my favorite high-paying affiliate programs.

Web Hosting

You can join as many affiliate programs as you want and promote anything you want to anyone you want.

But, if you want to be successful at affiliate marketing and make steady money, you’ll need to recommend the right things to the right people.

Let’s use my affiliate program as an example.

I have a blogging course that provides the tools and training you need to start, grow, and monetize a blog. This course is primarily marketed to aspiring female entrepreneurs that want to make money blogging.

If someone signs up for my affiliate program, they get a special trackable link that they can share with others. Now, if their audience is also primarily females that want to make money blogging (like mine), the course will be a great recommendation for them! But, if their audience is financial advisors, doctors, or motorcycle enthusiasts, my course probably wouldn’t be a very attractive offer to them.

So, think about who you are writing for and what they want from you. Then decide on a few specific products or services you can recommend to your audience that they might actually like and/or use.

Example: A mom blogger who writes for twin moms already knows who her audience is. She knows that moms of twins might like and use the City Select Double Stroller. << That’s an affiliate link! You could join the Amazon affiliate program, get your trackable link to this product, and recommend it to your readers.

Once you become known as a trustworthy resource for moms with twins, it will give your product recommendations that much more weight. And that’s what affiliate marketing is all about: being a trustworthy resource, recommending products that truly benefit your audience, and getting paid to do it!

Now that you have joined some affiliate programs and decided on a few great products that you want to promote, you’ll need to create some promotional content that you can share with your readers.

You can write blog posts, share content on social media, or send emails to your mailing list recommending your stuff.

Need help starting a mailing list? Check out this article!

Remember that you’re promoting something that you truly believe your audience will like and use! You should never promote products that you don’t truly believe in or find useful, just for the money.

That is just plain sketchy, so don’t do that.

We’re trying to build an honest and reliable reputation so that we can make an income and also make an impact with our readers…but we have to do things the right way if we’re going to make that happen.

Now, let’s break down the 3 steps listed above and turn them into an actionable side hustle that makes you a steady $1k (or more) every month.

What are the exact things you need to do to earn up to $1,000 from your affiliate marketing side hustle every single month? I’m glad you asked!

First, sign up for a high-paying affiliate program, like mine.

My affiliates earn 25% commissions on their sales, which means every single course sale is going to put over $24 in your pocket. You could sign up for other popular affiliate programs too, but I highly recommend sticking with programs that pay a high commission. This will help you to earn more money with less effort.

Second, make sure you’re speaking to the right people when you recommend your affiliate products and/or services. You have a much higher chance of making a sale if you’re promoting something that your audience would genuinely benefit from!

And last but not least, share those affiliate links whenever you have a chance! Be sure to follow FTC guidelines every time you share your stuff, but don’t hold back from sharing. Write great articles, create catchy pins and share them on Pinterest, work your recommendations into your email marketing, etc.

If you were to join my affiliate program and promote my blogging course to your audience, you would just need (4) people to make a purchase through your affiliate link to earn a hundred bucks! Woohoo! If you got (40) people to purchase the course in a month, you’d hit your goal of $1,000.

Do you know (4) people that could benefit from comprehensive online business training? You probably do, and you didn’t even realize it until just now.

All of my course students can join the affiliate program and earn commissions through this recommendation. The course fills a very real need in the blogging/entrepreneur space and it has 5 star ratings from every student that has enrolled.

Remember, when you’re promoting something that people will truly benefit from, it makes the sale sooo much easier.

Let’s use another example to prove that point.

Let’s say you’re a blogger or a virtual assistant or a graphic designer, and you want to recommend website hosting to your ideal client. You already know that it will benefit them, because setting up on a self-hosted site is the best way to maximize efficiency and grow your income online.

You can recommend a website hosting company that will pay you a commission for promoting and selling their services. Most of the bigger hosting companies will pay between $50 – $100 per hosting sale.

And that means, if you sell 10+ hosting packages a month, you’ll make OVER $1,000 every single month! Now, just imagine that you sell (10) Siteground hosting packages and (40) blogging course packages every month.

And a true impact in the blogging world…Of course, this is only applicable if your target market is bloggers or online business owners…

If blogging/business isn’t your niche, you can use this same system for any affiliate program that you join. Join an affiliate program, share your affiliate link with your audience, and encourage them to take action by making a purchase. When they make a purchase, you make a commission.

Easy peasy.

Affiliate marketing started out as a simple side hustle for me, but it quickly grew into an important part of my revenue model. Affiliate marketing makes up about one-third of my blogging income, and my recommendations have become a trusted resource for my audience.

Keep in mind that being successful with affiliate marketing does require you to have some form of an audience. You’ll be recommending products to people, and you can only make money if those people actually buy what you’re recommending.

How can you build up a solid audience? You’ll learn everything you need to know about growing an audience and making money from your blog in this course. And the best part of the course is the free affiliate program that comes along with it!

  1. Hey Cate,

This is an awesome walk-through, thanks very much for spending the time putting it together!

You’ve mentioned a couple of specific affiliate programs like Siteground and Bluehost, but in case any of your readers are looking for other high-paying programs, here are a few recommendations:

Elegant Themes (50% of original sale + recurring commissions), and ThemeIsle (55% commission) both offer WordPress themes, and these can be a logical next step to the people you’ve promoted hosting packages to.

*(I personally like to stick to affiliate programs that offer recurring commissions though, as these will continue to pay out for however long a referral remains a customer. There are plenty of these available – see below)*

    – ClickFunnels – A platform that provides users with everything they need to market, sell, and deliver their products and services online. They offer 40% recurring commission, plus 5% second-tier commission from each sale that your referred affiliates make.

    – Instapage – An online tool that helps users create sales and landing pages. They offer 50% of a customer’s first payment, plus a 30% lifetime share of all revenue.

    – Teachable – An online course creation platform that lets bloggers and entrepreneurs create and sell eCourses to their audiences. They offer 30% recurring commission.

There are plenty of others available – just Google ‘recurring commission affiliate program’ and you’ll find loads of them!

I hope this helps both you and your readers.

    Keep up the great work!

  2. It sounds like a money chain for me. You are earning mainly by promoting web hosting and blogging course book. In tern, your readers will do the same.

  3. Thank you for commenting. It is a simple example of HOW to make money through affiliate marketing (promoting web hosting and my course). And if your audience would benefit from it, you could absolutely follow my lead in this…but, it’s not a money chain, it’s just an example of what you CAN do. The PRINCIPLE of affiliate marketing works the same, whether you promote my stuff or not. You choose affiliate programs, promote their stuff, and get paid when people make a purchase. It’s actually a very common and successful marketing method in many industries.
