Should You Use Smile Direct Club to Straighten Your Smile?

If you’ve been part of my little online world for a while, then you know some things about my past and the pain behind the pretty smile. Yeah, I tend to over share if I think there’s a chance it can help someone else! More oversharing coming your way in 3….2….1

Growing up, I had serious self-esteem issues because of my crooked teeth (and the bullies that made fun of me). I spent my entire teenage life in braces – nearly a decade of tightening brackets, wearing headgear, having cuts on my lips and tongue, hesitating to smile or laugh – it was rough.

After all those years in braces, my teeth were finally straight, and the second part of my life could begin.

The smiling. The laughing without hiding my teeth. Like REALLY laughing. Eating whatever I wanted. Having the confidence to talk to guys.

It was pretty awesome. And it was awesome for a long time!

But fast forward one husband and two babies later – I lost my retainers. Boooooooo.

I took my sweet time getting back to the orthodontist and my teeth started shifting and crowding. As you can imagine, I didn’t ever want them going back to the way they were before braces. They were sooooo bad back then.

I saw an ad for these clear aligners from Smile Direct Club as I was scrolling on Facebook one day, and after a little research, I was sold. Clear aligners delivered to your door at a super affordable price. Whuuuuut?!!

Most of you guys know that I’m a full-time blogger with two small kids. I don’t have a lot of free time for driving to extra appointments every month. I kinda like the whole “deliver this stuff to my door” idea!

To get started with Smile Direct Club, you just have to get some 3D images taken of your teeth. You can either schedule a FREE visit to one of their Smile Shops to have this done by a Smile Guide or take your own scans with their at-home impression kit.

I went into the Smile Shop for my scans.

During that one consultation, my Smile Guide took images of my teeth with a fancy little camera wand. Quick and pain free. And those images formed a 3D image of my smile.

Looked like this:

If you ever had braces or retainers before, you know that we usually had to sit in an orthodontist chair for a million years while nasty-tasting clay was molded to our teeth, and now in 2019/2020 (!!!) they can just snap a few quick pictures of your teeth and send you on your way!

The consultation takes about 30 minutes, but ultimately they’re just snapping some pictures of your teeth and showing you how to use your aligners when they arrive… at your door. You can set up your free Smile Shop appointment right here.

Did I mention that I love having stuff shipped to my door?

Those 3D scans of my teeth were sent to an orthodontist who would design a smile plan for me to shift my teeth into their perfect position. That position that they *used to* be in before I lost my retainers!

Don’t. Lose. Your. Retainers. People!

And as promised, my aligners were delivered to my house in a big purple box with a bunch of other goodies. I’m already a pro when it comes to braces and retainers (not my first rodeo) so I popped those aligners right in and let them get to work.

If you’re a newbie when it comes to aligners like this, the Smile Direct Club kit comes with a few tools to help you “seat” your aligners properly. And if you need any help, their customer support team is available to assist.

The aligners WILL. BE. SNUG.

They are supposed to be snug. They are shifting your teeth, so you’ll feel some pressure.

Your Smile Direct Club kit comes with your entire treatment of weekly aligners. Which I love! I don’t have to wait for future deliveries or go to any appointments to pick things up – it’s all right here on day one.

Everything is clearly labeled. The aligners are organized by week, and when you’re done with one week, you just toss the old ones and replace them with the new aligners for the following week.

In addition to your weekly aligners, the kit also comes with:

– a chewy tool to seat your aligners

– a tool to remove your aligners
– a smile stretcher for taking your regular photo updates
– amazing-smelling chap-stick
– a teeth whitening kit
– a little booklet with inspirational quotes

After your initial consultation at the Smile Shop, they send you home with a free teeth whitening kit. It comes with whitening gel and an LED light that you can use for 5 minutes a day to speed up the whitening process.

Looks like this:

You just plug the light into your phone, bite down on the mouthpiece, and let the accelerator light work its magic. Even though I feel totally silly with this glowing light in my mouth, it’s worth it for the extra whitening power!

Even though you won’t be going into an orthodontist office every month, you do have support every step of the way. You’ll get reminder messages each week to change your aligners. You’ll send progress pictures to a state-certified orthodontist to make sure you’re staying on track.

And the average treatment time is about six months.

My personal smile journey with Smile Direct Club is going to take about five months, and so far, I’m loving every minute of it. Yes, even the tenderness from my shifting teeth makes me sooooo happy! Because I know it’s working!

There are two payment options: $1895 paid in full up front, or a deposit of $250 and $85/mo for 24 months.

Note: some insurance companies WILL reimburse you for partial payment of your aligners, so definitely check into your policy and see if they’ll help you out with costs!

If you want the easiest and most affordable way to straighten your teeth, you found it right here!

I’ll be doing regular updates on my progress over on Instagram (check out my story highlights called Smile Direct Club). And I’ll update this blog post with before and after pictures when my treatment is done too.

If you get started with your own aligners, be sure to comment here or send me a note so that I can cheer you on and support you!

I had braces when I was in middle school. I wish this was around back then lol! I hated wearing braces. I wasn’t the best about wearing my retainer after I got my braces off so my bottom teeth started to get slightly crooked again. If I decide to get them straightened back out, I’ll definitely check this out! Great post!

Oh. My. Gosh!!! This was me too!!! Except I didn’t get braces in my teen years. I waited until after we paid the $14,000 for both of our daughters and saw first hand, their smiles (teeth) transformed. I vowed right then to do mine as soon as we could afford mine. I got my braces (another $7,000) at 47. I was so excited to get them off before my 50th birthday and our oldest daughter’s wedding!!! You cannot believe my before and afters. They feel soooo much better! I can smile, floss and be confident!!!! This is a GREAT article!

Oh man, what a story! I’m so glad you did that for our daughters and then also for yourself too! Braces were always so expensive, it’s cool that we have such affordable options now. My before and afters are crazy too – I have never shown the befores to anyone except my immediate family that knew my “before” haha. So glad my teeth are better now and this company made it so easy to get back on track when they started shifting!

I wasn’t consistent with wearing my retainers either :/ This sounds like a great, easy option. I’m looking forward to seeing your updates!

Such an easy, convenient system they have created. We were joking that by the time our kids are needing braces, they’ll just print their aligners right out of their phones hahaha!

Thank you for this article, I have heard about this company and was wondering how well they work. I should have gotten braces when I was young but never did so I have been wondering if these kind of straighteners would help me. I will be checking back to see your progress!

Yes, definitely follow along with my progress and updates – so far so good! And this month they’re offering $150 OFF for anyone that I refer, so just let me know if/when you want the code!

You are so beautiful Cate and it never occurred to me that you needed any help with your teeth because you have a beautiful smile. But I am really glad that you shared your experience with us all. My older one is getting orthodontic treatment and it is costing us a lot. My husband has just been waiting for years to do something about his teeth. I am sure he would love to try that. I will definitely share the results.

Yeah, treatment can be crazy expensive. These aligners aren’t ideal for severe cases, but for minor crowding and gaps, they’re perfect, and it only costs $1850. Sooo worth it!

I had braces as a teenager but my gap came back and have been looking for an alternative to braces. This looks amazing and I will be looking into it. Thanks so much

Yeah these are perfect for minor gaps and crowding, they have night time aligners only as well, but I have the all-day wear ones and my treatment will only be about 5 months!
