5 Simple Ways to Make the Most of Small Living Space

When my husband and I first got married, we lived in a 250 square-foot space. I am not going to lie, it was hard. But living there really did teach me some simple tools for keeping my sanity in a small living space. Here are some helpful tips for making the most of small living space.

1. Purge!

My number one rule was to get rid of things that we didn’t use at least once each week. If you have clothes or shoes that you haven’t worn all year, donate them. Go through all of your paperwork and mail, shred the junk, and file the rest. If it isn’t a daily necessity, it needs a new home.

2. Make sure everything has a place.

Again, living in a small space is hard. You have to be dedicated and make sure that everything has a place and stays in its place when it is not being used. So, invest in a few space-saving organizers. I have a coat rack/door hanger that I love! It hooks onto the back of my bedroom door and has six individual hooks to hang coats, sweaters, purses, and scarves. Decorative baskets can be filled with other “necessity” stuff and left on a dresser or put up in the closet. If everything has a specific place, it is so much easier to keep a small space functional.

3. Keep your wardrobe simple.

This one is harder for ladies, but it can be done with a little bit of effort. My rule is to have enough clothing to get me through a whole week without having to do laundry. Some people want a little more variety than that, so my only advice is to buy pieces that are good quality and functional. If you have a big walk-in closet or a little extra storage space, then this doesn’t apply as much to you. However, keep in mind that the more stuff you have, the more stuff you have to keep clean, organized, and maintained.

4.  Keep things as clean as possible.

Even if everything has a place, small spaces get cluttered easily. So be sure to dust, vacuum, and make the bed every day. It will make things look and feel more tidy and it will make being at home more enjoyable, even though space is limited. 5. Before buying anything, ask yourself three things.

Do I really need this? Where am I going to put this? How often am I going to use this? If you really need it, if you have a designated spot for it, and you are sure that you’ll use it regularly, then it’s probably a reasonable purchase.

It is certainly possible to live comfortably in a really small space. It’s actually a good thing that clutter and useless junk has nowhere to pile up, and you learn to get by on simple necessities.
